La Clemenza Di Tito
About the Production
La Clemenza di Tito was originally commissioned to mark the coronation of Leopold II, Emperor to the Hapsburg Throne, in 1791. Thus, the titular Emperor Tito backdropped by Ancient Rome becomes a medium to discourage the rise of democracy and protect the status quo. Subverting the tradition of opera as a tool for propaganda in the 18th century, Ping Chong directs Tito to marry the original intention of the political opera while laying bare its objective for an audience today consumed by media propaganda and the modern ruling class.
